A unique arts class at Clyde A. Erwin High School (CAEHS) offers students the opportunity to express themselves artistically through movement.
Erwin prides itself on being the only high school in Buncombe County Schools (BCS) to offer a dance class to students. The class is not only about learning routines or technique, but it goes a little deeper than that.
“Dance is a way for students to express their emotions,” said dance teacher Lisa Laney. “Students discover the power of communication without using words, embrace their individuality, and step out of their comfort zone in a safe space.”
Being the only dance teacher in BCS, Ms. Laney said it definitely has its perks. She gets to see the high schoolers in a different light than most other teachers and peers. Dance students over the years have gained a lot of advice and inspiration from Ms. Laney.
“I get to watch my students blossom from being scared to death of dancing in front of an audience to asking to do a solo by their senior year,” she explained. “I hope they learn it is okay to make mistakes. I also hope each student learns to love themselves no matter what happens, and to be comfortable in who he or she is. Believe in yourself because I believe in you.”
Ms. Laney also believes in the dance program, and the impact it has on CAEHS. As Ms. Laney took her final bow with the dance students at the Spring Showcase; she hopes to see the program carry on for years to come long after her retirement.
“I hope the program at Erwin continues to grow,” she said. “We truly have something special here.”
