Students from both Oakley Elementary School (OES) and A.C. Reynolds High School (ACRHS) teamed up for a special campus beautification project at Oakley! High schoolers in the Horticulture Class worked alongside elementary students to set up flower beds, spread mulch, plant shrubs and flowers, as well as assisting with other work around the school.
“It was a great experience for everyone involved,” said Horticulture teacher Robert Elijah Frisby. “The high school students taught the younger students about the processes and procedures for gardening. There was more learning in that short time frame than both groups realized, and a memory that they will carry for a long time. I hope this is something we can do more of in the future.”
OES students worked on a design for how they wanted their garden to look. They were given a specific budget for the project. Mr. Frisby said it was amazing to see the students’ hardwork and dedication to this volunteer project.
“All of the work for the garden was completely student driven,” Mr. Frisby explained. “As the agriculture teacher, I gave a few pointers about planting the flowers and other plants the appropriate way, and just a few other guidelines about setup. Both groups of students were really driven for this project to look good and be a success.”
