Welcome to my Classroom

My name is Tate MacQueen and I am proud to teach in the Social Studies department at Erwin High School. I served as the coach of the men's and women's soccer at Erwin High School. I was born in Atlanta and moved to Wilmington before my first birthday. I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1998 and obtained my graduate degree from the University of Delaware in 2000. I taught on the collegiate level before starting my high school teaching career in Washington, DC. While in the DC metro area, I taught at Richard Milburn Public Charter High School, Duke Ellington School of the Arts and at Central High School. I was named Teacher of the Year at RMPCHS and am honored to have that distinction. I have taught and coached at East Henderson, Owen and now at Erwin. I was fortunate to be recognized at Charles D. Owen High School with the Brad Johnson Award for being "the Educator who has made Outstanding and Dedicated Contributions in the loves of Owen Athletes."

I met my wife in the DC Metro area at the start of the 21st Century. That was life-changing just teaching 2.9 miles from the Pentagon on 9/11/2001, which caused me to re-evaluate my life and priorities. My wife and I decided to move back to my home state and to Asheville to start our family.

In North Carolina, I taught and coached at East Henderson High School for 4 years before moving to Charles D. Owen High School, where I was for 6 years. I began my teaching at Erwin in 2014 and resumed my coaching career from in 2016-19 with both the men's and women's soccer teams. Our boys program amassed 47 wins in 4 seasons and made the state playoffs every year.

The courses I teach are typically American History I and II as well as Civics and Economics.

It is a privilege to serve Buncombe County students and their families!

I will be using the Google Classroom platform and integrate Zoom when needed, Newsela and other resources along with a digital textbook to be provided in a pdf format. I am not going to overwork students as we will work smarter and more efficiently.

I will provide the Google Classroom code via email.

Lastly, I want to stress that my role as a teacher is to foster and develop critical thinking skills, analyzing skills and skills for differentiation with comparing and contrasting themes in US History. We live in a complex and often times complicated world and the history of America is not a simplistic, easy nor benign one. There is much to celebrate and much to mourn over for sure. Please be aware that I may take positions I personally do not believe in order to facilitate dialogue and debate. My number one prerequisite is respect, acceptance and an eagerness to learn. The agenda is simple: to engage in the process of learning and growing together. We will navigate the times we are in by understanding the times that preceded all of us. My class is one of energy and passion and everyone is welcome.

And remember, "those who don't learn from history are destined to repeat it."
